Is a used MG ZS a good car?

If you want a small family SUV, where value for money is key, the MG ZS could be a good starting point.

It’s worth noting that if you look at alternatives of a similar size and age, the MG ZS won’t fare too well. The interior isn’t as upmarket as a Mazda CX-3, for example, and the engines aren’t particularly refined (though you can get an electric version if that’s a problem).

You will also find the Citroen C3 Aircross more comfortable on a bumpy road and there’s more road noise with the MG, too. The ZS is surprisingly fun on a country road, though. It scored just three stars in Euro NCAP testing as well, lacking automatic emergency braking.

Regardless, where the MG ZS wins is that, like-for-like, it will be considerably less expensive than any comparable alternatives. On top of that, it’s really practical, with a more spacious cabin and bigger boot than most others you might consider.

You will also find Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so even though some of the menus can be quite confusing to use, you have all you need for maps and music streaming from your phone.

What to look for when buying a second hand MG ZS

One of the big positives for MG ZS ownership is that all new models come with a seven-year warranty, so even the earliest example will only just be coming to the end of this.

It’s tricky to build a comprehensive view of the car’s overall reliability, though, because the company sells relatively few. That being said, it appears there haven’t been any major headaches to watch out for, and overall, MG itself scores pretty well for reliability.

As such you should simply follow all of the usual second-hand car buying tips, such as checking the wheels, tyres and bodywork for damage, making sure the interior fittings and fixings are all in place, and taking the car for a test drive to make sure it drives with no alarming noises.

MG ZS FAQs

Although it might be tempting to save cash by buying an MG ZS, the reason it costs so much less than alternatives is because its build quality, materials and driving experience are not as good.

Overall, the MG ZS has a good reputation for reliability, with no alarm bells being rung by owners. It’s always worth looking for cars with a good service history and fairly clean MOT history.

If you opt for the electric ZS, it should come with at least one cable for three-pin plugs and one for 7kW AC charging. It might also have another cable for faster DC charging, so make sure all available cables are included.

The charger for an electric MG ZS is located in the front grille of the car. You open the flap and put the charger in, connecting the other end to whatever electrical device you’re using to charge the car.
