Find out more about the INEOS Grenadier

Is the Ineos Grenadier a good car?

The Ineos Grenadier is a chunky off-roader that harks back to old-school 4x4s rather than the new wave of big, posh SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender. Its ethos is “Where possible, the Grenadier remains analogue and mechanical,” which sums up what you can expect.

It’s an odd approach to building a car in the 2020s, when the car industry is focusing on connected, electric and even autonomous vehicles. It’s a bit like shunning an iPhone in favour of one of those Blackberry phones with a full QWERTY keyboard. But still paying a hefty fee for the privilege.

Essentially, the Ineos Grenadier looks like the lovechild of an old Land Rover Defender and a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. Ruggedly boxy in its design, the Grenadier is solidly aimed at buyers of practical, capable 4x4s, with its ladder-frame chassis and engine air intake above the front wheelarch to enable wading through water up to 80cm deep.

The cabin is also oriented to using the Grenadier in muddy environs, with the standard seating upholstery combining hard-wearing cloth and vinyl that is said to be stain-, dirt- and water-resistant, and easy to clean. Leather seats are available as an option for those who want a more premium feel.

Despite the analogue focus, there is a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, with the main vehicle controls – some of which, especially the gear lever, look remarkably familiar, if you’ve driven any BMWs of late – located in the centre console. The touchscreen is distinctly digital, controlling infotainment functions such as DAB radio, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, as well as displaying off-road relevant information, such as the angle of the car or where the steering wheel is pointed.

The Ineos Grenadier is an off-road monster - but you pay handsomely for that ability

Another concession to the 21st Century is the range of driver assistance technologies fitted as standard. Apart from the usual complement of airbags (eight in total), and the now-standard traction and stability control, there’s lane departure warning, intelligent speed assistance, automatic emergency braking, cruise control and a driver drowsiness detection system.

Other features that speak to the Grenadier’s practicality include six grab-handles, six cupholders, USB-A and C ports, and a 12V front socket. In the rear, the outer seats feature ISOFIX child seat anchor points, while the 60:40 bench has a dry underseat stowage compartment.

The boot is accessed via 30:70 split rear doors, with the smaller door enabling quick access for smaller items and the larger door for loading larger items. The cargo area also has a stowage locker to keep items out of sight, along with 10 tie-down rings if you need to secure any luggage.

Under the bonnet is a choice of two BMW 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engines – one diesel, one petrol – both of which have seen service in a range of vehicles, so they’re tried and tested. They also meet current emissions standards, so you can go off-roading in the London ULEZ…

Grenadier owners also have plenty of opportunities to personalise their car, from option packs to roof-mounted bike carriers, sand ladders, jerry cans, winches and awnings.

We’ll have an in-depth review once our expert road testers have spent more time with the car, so check back for their verdict. For now, take a look at used examples of the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Want to sell your car? Well, Carwow can help with that, too.
