Is the Fiat 600 a good car?
Do you like the idea of the electric Fiat 500e but need something less dinky? Fiat could have just what you’re looking for in the form of the new 600. Think of it as the 500’s older sibling. Maybe the 600 isn’t quite as cute to look at as the baby of the family, but it’s a whole lot more useful when you need a helping hand.
That said, the Fiat 600 isn’t exactly big – it has larger dimensions than a Vauxhall Corsa Electric but it’s a bit smaller than other electric SUVs, such as the Volvo EX30. That makes this new Fiat usefully small for town driving and parking, but big enough to make a practical car for a young family.
Instead of cramped back seats, the 600 promises a bit more space, and being a five-door will make fitting child seats a lot easier than in the three-door 500e.
Pushchairs and shopping will be taken care of by the 360-litre boot. That’s a good capacity for such a small car, with a lot more space than you get in the Vauxhall, but a bit less than in the Volvo.
Storage in the cabin should be pretty good too, with a handy 15 litres for all the bits and bobs you might want within arm’s reach.
The Fiat 600 is mighty appealing if you like the funky retro styling of the 500e but need a bit more space
So, the Fiat 600 promises good space in a compact package. But how well will it drive? You will have to wait for the first drives to take place soon, but figures suggest the 600 should prove nippy rather than quick by electric car standards. The 156hp motor delivers a 0-62mph time of 9.0 seconds. That ought to make it feel reasonably lively around town, although it won’t be as rapid on the open road as more powerful electric cars.
And being small, it won’t take long out on the open road before you need to find a charger, right? Well, apparently not. Its range of 250 miles is pretty good for a car of this size, and is about 35 miles more than you get from the Volvo EX30, according to official tests.
The 54kWh battery can handle 100kW rapid charging, which means it should take under half an hour to charge from 20-80%. Fiat reckons a full charge from a home wallbox will take around six hours.
